* for experts Relevant to or qualified staff in all areas of practice, throughout the document utilises standards and practice criteria.

This comprehensive manual should encourage standardized good practice which is evidence based, references are given throughout the document.
The manual covers education of staff, patients and carers, debates issues of health and safety, documentation and equipment usage.

Site selection and placement of both peripheral and central access is covered along with recommended dressing and maintenance of these devices. As are issues of phlebotomy and blood letting from central venous access devices.
Alternative administration sites are also covered for example subcutaneous pumps and ommaya reservoirs.

A section is dedicated to the consideration of the drug being administered including chemotherapy, patient controlled analgesia, parenteral nutrition, transfusions, epidural and immunoglobulin therapy. Complications of therapies are given with management criteria.

A beneficial inclusion is assessment tools, which can enhance patient care and practice.

This document is available on line through the RCN and has been written by a collaborative team of experts and is of great value to nurses as an educational and reference document.
