Criterion Theatre London | Sunday 18 October 2009

Our Special Audience with Stephen Fry was naturally a star-studded affair, with celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, actress Natasha McElhone and musician Mick Hucknall attending. The evening, the idea of literary agent Ed Victor, was hosted by Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research's chairman of fundraising Alastair Campbell with BBC presenter Alan Yentob interviewing Stephen.

-
Stephen was incredibly warm and open, chatting with guests at the champagne reception and answering questions before and during the show and even at the Stage Door afterwards!

During the evening, Stephen spoke very frankly about his sexuality and struggles living with bipolar disorder. Fry also defended his love of Twitter, the social network he is famous for championing, saying: "I am a child, and I love playing with new toys.

Just hours after the performance, glowing reviews appeared online.

Bruce Dessau, writing for the Evening Standard, commented: "Culture vultures were delighted to discover that Fry is writing the libretto for an opera based on EM Forster's story The Life To Come. And QI's fans could barely contain themselves on being informed that there is talk of three nights at the Royal Albert Hall in November 2010."

Alastair Campbell, blogged about the evening, saying: "The ongoing saga of Gordon Brown and his choice of favourite biscuit is real 'can't win territory' for him, as I learned at the reception prior to the excellent Audience with Stephen Fry for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research at the Criterion, which went some way towards cheering me up after Burnley's defeat at Blackburn."

Summing up the evening in a tweet (naturally), Stephen Fry said: "Enjoyed it greatly, though some embarrassed writhing at archive clips shown."

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research would like to thank everyone who attended and supported the evening. We raised £30,000 which will help us find better treatments and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
